The printed books voyage
Hi every one this is John E Sparks, author of Unearthly Tales. I was asked recently to talk about the printed versions of my book. Unearthly Tales From Space and the second version, Unearthly Tales.
The first book is: UNEARTHLY TALES FROM SPACE, the cover art was created by, Lamin Martin. Creating the first book is all ways an adventure, or maybe a slight challenge. I had been writing for some time and new I needed a little help. Admitting I needed help I think was the best first step. Kind of like dealing with Alcohol addiction issues. The first step is admitting there is a problem. I contacted a writing editor, and had the gentleman read over my work. Peter Heyrman, plheyrman@verizon.net As a new writer I was scared. Fear and lots of it in my mind, but Peter did the one thing that keep me from being afraid of what he would say.

“From the first page onward your overall goal is clear: a story imagined within the context of the classic science fiction theme of first contact. The structure of two viewpoints- Earth’s and the extraterrestrials-makes perfect sense. Your enthusiasm for the story, and for the art and craft of writing, is obvious, and is also very much in your favor. As long as you can translate that enthusiasm into work, and if you can keep an open mind about that work, you will find that writing is a challenging task, and a valuable skill. Will it be profitable? No one can say. The marketplace is fickle, and even the best writer must get a few breaks to have any chance at all, but if you’re going to try that route, you must have the best book possible.”

Not all, but more than most people do that quickly. The reorganization is yours, and it makes a lot of sense. It shows how much thought you put into this, and I get the feeling you had fun with it.”
Writing for me was a journey. A voyage into the inner mind facing fears, enjoying thoughts and exploring concepts. After working with Peter I receiving the confidence to continue. So I published my book through Outskirts Press. Today I am working to shift away from Outskirts but at the time they were the only company I had heard of. In time you learn and life reveals new and interesting paths a person can take. The best thing we can do is start the voyage and see what life has to offer.

Thank you every one for following my blogs. Here I wanted to share the second voyage with my book. I am a man that loves art. I can’t draw, but I love and respect art and its touch on life. I grew up with comic books of Mickey Mouse and all the rest of Disney’s best. I have spent the years writing and collecting images that reflected my story and dreams of graphic novel. Page after page of images that reflects my charters and 1940 and 50’s classic science fiction look and feel. Much like the X-box game I played, (Fall Out). Maybe in time I will have a page of the website dedicated to all the images I saved. Most of the images were art, some are famous actors and actresses dressed playing there parts in good entertainment.
My desire was to create a graphic novel. So I started the journey looking for companies. During the journey I saw website explaining how to make your own graphic novel. Every step I took in my voyage I knew creating my own graphic novel was not my skill. In my voyage looking for companies I found one. I couldn’t stop looking at the company and there art. The company published books and graphic novels and were making animation and filming movies. In my heart of hearts it was like landing in heaven. A dream was forming in my mind and heart. A dream that has been alive in my heart for a long time, dreaming about writing, books, graphic novels and seeing everything become animation.
I republished my book with: Power Publishers. http://www.power-publishers.com/ Publishing a second time is always a little easer, or maybe they were just easier to work with. The book is called: Unearthly Tales. It’s the same book as I published with a different company, just edited a little different with a new name and image. The best part of my story is the graphic novel. As you can see on my website, images of the graphic novel are displayed. At this time the graphic novel is still in production but I grow more excited seeing it get closer to being finished.
The next part of my voyage is the website. Here again I learn I have no ability. I could try making my own, but it would require an extended time of retraining and school. TOP SECRET EMERGENCY TELEGRAPH – To: Authorized Personnel Only; Location: National Aeronautics Research Consortium (N.A.R.C.) Labs. From: Doctor Robert J. Guttenberg, N.A.R.C. Director. Attention, all personnel: Your help is desperately needed in relaying this message to anyone who will listen. One week ago, N.A.R.C. labs received an unearthly signal, emanating from the far side of the moon. The renowned Harvard graduate Dr. Sing Ann Howell can barely hold our computer together. Effective immediately, by Presidential order, a 24-hour work rotation is in effect. Project Blue Star, America’s nuclear rocket, is being pulled from its ashes. Pilot training will be provided by Captain Tom Dangerfield in an effort to beat the Soviet response. Time is of the essence. We cannot allow ourselves to lose the race for this unearthly mystery … Addendum: Over eleven hours ago, Tom Dangerfield and I encountered a woman of distinction who claims to be Anna Urisa, captain of the Guild scout ship from the planet Arseina, broadcasting the distress signal that we are now receiving. A little about me. I am a father of 3 boys and I have worked cleaning military bases through out the US. Cleaning up munitions, explosives and environmental damage from years of the past. Okay now having said that I need to tell you elements of my personality. I am a dreamer. Yes, that is right, my mind refuses to like reality and chooses to think about the, (What If.) What if I am wealthy? What if I wake up naked in the middle of the city, not sure why I am being chased and where are my clothes? Okay maybe not the last one, but my mind thinks about outer space. Dreams of the what if. Aliens, life culture and challenges of what is out in the stars. I could go on and on talking about looking at the stars late at night, staring at the moon with a dream to travel the cosmos.

Unearthly Tales, graphic novel is a chapter in my personal voyage. My dream of graphic novels growing someday into animation. I grew up reading comic books and watching Transformers. Nothing is better then space and robots. It took me a long time to find the art team now creating my graphic novel. They are extremely talented, I spent a couple of years saving image of people that might look like my characters and life in the 1940's and styles of clothes. I wrote up summaries about story, where people lived, elements of life experience. Any thing artist might need to follow my thoughts. How I created my characters.

I would like to introduce Doctor, Robert J Guttenberg and Doctor Sing Ann Howell. DR. Guttenberg currently is the Director of, National Aeronautics Research Consortium, (N.A.R.C.) DR. Sing is the lead scientist with a Mathematic Ph.D from Tokyo University, located in Japan. Earned a second Ph.D in Computer Engineering from Harvard University.
Step two. How I created my characters, Doctors, Sing and Guttenberg.
There are two versions of my book: Unearthly Tales From Space, and Unearthly Tales. I will share a few paragraphs used in both versions of my book in order to introduce each character. Then explain who they are, and what governs their personalities and motivation.

Step two. How I created my characters, Doctors, Sing and Guttenberg.

Chapter Six
Message in a Bottle
Dr. Robert Guttenberg drank the last of his scotch, and slammed the glass onto the table. He, eyed a month-old copy of the Sun Times. His nightly ritual entailed a glass of scotch and a look at the front page. Today’s was dated June 15, 1958.
He glanced at the front page photo, reading the caption: “National Aeronautics Research Consortium (NARC), opens its headquarters in Maine. Director Robert J. Guttenberg, presides over ceremony.” Robert had gotten used to the title of Doctor over the last thirteen years, but now, with the Doctor’s forty-first birthday just past, America’s President Andrew Summers had laid the burden of the National Aeronautics Research Consortium on his shoulders. It was all because of Sputnik.
A shadow of fear lingered in his mind every time he looked at that newspaper. He needed all the courage he could muster, including that in a bottle. Once the whiskey had washed away his fear he stumbled off to bed.
Here we see Dr. Guttenberg was posted on the front cover of a newspaper signifying he is an important element to the story. As leader of the NARC he is under pressure, a drink or two at night relieving a little stress. We learn Guttenberg’s age signifying a midlife element while he feels the pressure. Soviet launch of Sputnik, famous event and an element of pressure on Guttenberg. In just the first couple of paragraphs we get a good feeling of who Guttenberg is and how he operates. He is an over stressed nerd. I used a famous name in history to help define who he is. Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press with replaceable/moveable wooden or metal letters in 1436 (completed by 1440). Commonly called, Gutenberg Press.
As I created Dr. Guttenberg I would think about who I am and draw the opposite. I sometimes wish I was a Vulcan. No emotions and in tight control. But sadly I am very emotional and possess a mind filled with dreams. I wish I was a man who never effected by women and their power to draw my attention. It’s like superman and Kryptonite, women can grab my attention and make me powerless. Guttenberg doesn’t see this, and doesn’t respond, causing Dr. Sing to work harder trying to grab his attention. I am using the reverse sociology idea. The more she tries to grab his interest and secure her future for good. The more she becomes emotionally drawn and attracted to Dr. Guttenberg. Guttenberg has no idea any of this is happing, he likes the attention but is focused on reaching outer space.
Chapter 6
Message in a Bottle
An attractive woman poked her head up from behind the workstation, and saw Robert coming. “Good morning, sunshine,” she said with a touch of sarcasm. “I am so pleased you could join us.”
“I’m sorry, what was your name again?”
She looked at Guttenberg and narrowed her eyes. “Sing Ann Howell…Director Sing Ann Howell.” Laughter burst from the other scientists. Dr. Howell approached Guttenberg, and ran her finger down the lapel of his lab coat, giving him a friendly smile, “Be a gentlemen, Robert, and offer a woman a cigarette.”
Howell watched his embarrassment grow. She was new to the lab, with her first Ph.D. in Mathematics from Tokyo University and second in Computer Engineering from Harvard. A product of Japan’s postwar reconstruction process, Robert felt she was the wave of the future, and she was cute.
As Guttenberg pulled out a cigarette, Sing prolonged his discomfort by pulling two pins from her hair, letting it spill to her shoulders. She took the cigarette, then turned to the men behind her. “One of you boys have a light?” A handful of Zippo lighters appeared. She chose one, then took a long drag. She crossed her arms, eyed Guttenberg, and asked, “So what would you like to know?”
“I would like to know— wait, what are you doing?”
Dr. Howell put the cigarette between her lips, then reached up and unbuttoned his lab coat. “Hold still, honey, I will tell you everything you need to know, but first I need to get you dressed properly.” She corrected his fiasco with the buttons.
Doctor Sing Ann Howell, a Japanese women brilliant with a manipulative ability. She knows the power women have and isn’t afraid to use it. Reading we learn she is a product of post war Japan. Before the war women had almost no rights or ability to pursue there dreams. After the war and governed by American forces, deep changes were made. Creating Dr. Sing I remembered the words of an older Japanese women.
“Before the war if you were born poor, you would stay poor. After the war, you were given a chance to move up.” Grandparent of my friend.
As I created Dr. Sing I use the idea of a woman that is brilliant, and feeling stuck in a man’s world. Elements of insecurity still plagues her mind, reminding her to look for ways to secure her future. She had paid her way through college working in a bar. Not just any bar, if you know Asia and how some of the bars work, women work a key role. They are entertainment, they work as a (buy me drink girl), you buy a drink and they earn a portion of what you spend. They spend their time as your best friend. Men want one thing and the women want another, it’s a carful dance, trying to make sure they don’t need to leave the bar with the men in order to make their money. It takes a very skilled and clever mind to navigate this environment. Dr. Sing became a master, and when the right US person showed up, she use her skills to enter the US and receive a top line education chasing her security. Even though she finished her education in Japan and was the most talented in her ability, men still dominated hiring and work. She quickly found her name was the last on every hiring list.
With a top level American education and secure position as the lead scientist at NARC, she still felt a level of insecurity that haunt her mind. Everything was a threat, the temptation to keep using her talent as a buy me drink girl survived because of insecurity or fear. As I explore Dr. Sing I am sure we will learn more and see her need to face fears and insecurities. Sometimes fear is valid, maybe she knows how to face her challenges better than I do.
Character Creation.
I have used conversations, ideas, elements of actual people to create a character. When traveling a lot, talk to individuals while weighing for a flight. Talk to them and introduce yourself. You will be surprised how many want to talk and tell you there entire life stories. Some of what you will hear is a novel on its own. It will help you draw ideas that can be used in your characters. We all have struggles or concerns that will haunt us most of our lives. Fears, or personal struggles or dislikes or philosophy all can be used. Elements in our lives and the lives of others have a cycle or pattern that tends to repeat.
Character building is a voyage of mind body and soul, in my personal voyage I explored my thoughts wishes and desires. Wondering what life would be like if elements of science fiction became real.

So today was a learning experience. I was working to improve my Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Unearthly-Tales/552706428146951 and learned how to sell my book using a Author Marketing Application on Facebook. Here is where I learned how to use it. How to Sell Books on Facebook Without Paying for Advertising Nothing is perfect, but every step you can take greatly improves you changes of success.
